NTC Thermistors

SMD NTC Thermistors

SMD thermistors are available in 0805, 0603 and recently introduced 0402 sizenew1.gif (111 bytes). There is a MELF size selection as well.

Resistance (at 25°C) value offerings begin at 30 ohms and have a maximum value of 2.0M ohms. Resistance tolerances available are 10%, 5%, 3%, 2% and 1%. Beta (curve characteristics) have either 3% or 1% tolerance. SMD thermistors are ideal for compact circuits requiring temperature compensation for such applications as LCD displays, battery charging circuits, high-frequency "drift" protection, automotive remote sensors ... just to name a few. The unique part of the design of MMC's chip thermistors is the glass encapsulation. This procedure allows a high degree of accuracy and protection from external influences such as humidity. Additionally, MMC uses Nickel plated end caps to prevent leaching during any soldering method.

Leaded NTC Thermistors

MMC's leaded NTC thermistors are available in axial, radial and "thin" lead versions.

Axial Leaded Parts are the size of a typical glass diode and are available in bulk or taped for automatic insertion. The construction design adds strength to the glass encapsulation to insure the thermal material junction is protected from incidental contact ... breaking the glass and damaging the element. Two sizes are available ... 1.35mm x 2.5mm and 2.0mm x 4.0mm. Resistance ranges for both products start at 2K ohm up to 1M ohm. Tolerances range from 1% up to 5% and Beta tolerance is either 1% or 3%. Operating temperature range is -40°C to +300°C. Both parts are rated in excess of 350mW.

Radial Leads are available in 3 mechanical configurations. All three use an epoxy resin to protect the thermal element. One has a maximum size of 4.0mm x 3.5mm (lead space = 2.5mm) and offers a range of resistances from 30 ohms to 1.0M ohms. Another has a maximum diameter of 7.0mm and has values from 300 ohms to 200K ohms. Since both parts are epoxy coated, their operational temperature range is -40°C to +100°C. The third configuration is a "thin lead" part.

Thin Leads are commonly used in probe assemblies. Recently we are noting applications in assemblies where remote mounting using the long lead wires. This is done whenever PCB location is not feasible or thickness is critical. One application is thin-cell rechargeable batteries. Thin leaded thermistors are still in high demand for probe assemblies. MMC supplies only the thermistor, not the housing.
